RIO DE JANEIRO -- After winning his second consecutive silver medal in the triple jump Tuesday, Will Claye took a much greater leap, physically and emotionally. He removed an engagement ring from his bag, jumped into the stands, got down on his knee and asked longtime girlfriend Queen Harrison to marry him. Harrison, who had just missed the Olympic team by finishing fourth in the 100 hurdles at last months U.S. Olympic trials, said yes.?So, which was better, winning another Olympic medal or getting engaged??I feel like the engagement was probably better, Claye said. Just to see her face in the moment was special, and to see how happy she was despite the fact that she was supposed to be competing here too, and her event was going on at the same time. For us to share that moment, I feel like it trumped the hurt she had of not making the team.?I woke up this morning thinking this was going to be the best day of my life, and that came true.?That proposal took some attention away from Christian Taylor, who also had a great day and was equally deserving of coverage. Not because he asked anyone to marry him -- he did not -- but because he won his second consecutive gold medal.?Taylor leaped 17.86 meters on his first attempt, and it wound up being the days best mark, with Claye second at 17.76. He became the fifth athlete to win consecutive gold medals in the event, and the only American to do so since Myer Prinstein in 1900 and 1904. Given that Prinstein won his second triple jump gold at an Olympics where there were very few athletes outside the United States or Canada, Taylors feat is much greater.?As proud as he is of that accomplishment, Taylor was disappointed he did not break the world record of 18.29, or exactly 60 feet.?Every time I compete that record is what is on my mind. Thats what I live for, said Taylor, whose personal best is 18.21 meters (59 feet, 8 ? inches). Records are made to be broken. My coach and I pushed so hard in training, and I thought today was my moment. Ive seen world records go left and right here, and I thought, Yeah, let me add to that story.?To come away with a gold medal is not a bad day at the office, but I think thats what separates us from everyone else. That passion, that hunger, it just burns really deep.?The triple jump record was set 21 years ago by Great Britains Jonathan Edwards. Asked why no one has broken it since then, Taylor replied, Its 60 feet!?Thats virtually the same distance from home plate to the pitchers mound. Imagine Clayton Kershaw leaping that distance in just three jumps. And not hurting himself.?When you stretch that measurement and take off, you realize how long it is, Taylor said. In training, my coach and I visualize and visualize and visualize it, and Ive jumped 8 centimeters close to it. To be so close and yet so far -- I keep telling myself, no one remembers second. Im second all time, but I just have to keep on going.?Taylor and Claye plan to do that, perhaps again at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Which might be harder for Taylor, who would be 30 by then and already calls himself old.?There have been a lot of sacrifices and a lot of different moves, so it was a lot harder [than London], Taylor said. I have targets on my back. Ever since we stepped off the podium in London, we said, Its the road to Rio. Im going to enjoy tonight, but tomorrow, it will be the road to Tokyo. Just five minutes ago, we were already talking about that. One door closes and the next one opens. Were always thinking whats next.?Claye, of course, probably would prefer to win gold in Tokyo, but he probably will not propose to anyone in the stands there. Taylor, who calls Claye a brother because they both attended the University of Florida, was just shocked Tuesday that his teammate proposed after the event.I had no idea. I couldnt even imagine what was going through his head, Taylor said. To carry your engagement ring in your equipment bag? No. I wouldnt carry in anything. Everyone here has a story, and Im glad I got to witness that. Larry Jordan Jersey Store . PITTSBURGH -- Ryan Vogelsong feared his career might be over when he took a fastball to the face from the Rockies Jordan Lyles on May 23 and sustained facial fractures that necessitated surgery and a three-night hospital stay. However, the 39-year-old right-hander has looked sharp in his first two starts since coming off the disabled list. He took a tough-luck loss Wednesday night when the San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0.Vogelsong (1-2) gave up two unearned run and three hits in six innings while striking out five and walking one. He returned last Thursday and allowed one run in six innings against the Braves but did not factor in the decision in a game the Pirates lost.He pitched very well again and gave us a chance to win the game, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. He was very impressive.Prior to being injured, Vogelsong had a 3.74 ERA in 12 games, including two starts. If theres a blessing in disguise of getting hit, its the fact that I got to deal with (Pirates pitching coach) Ray Searage every day for two months, Vogelsong said. I was able to mix my pitches up and locate them.Since being called up July 17 from Triple-A El Paso, Jackson has recorded quality starts in four of five outings. The Miami Marlins released him June 2.Jankowskis steal came with two outs in the eighth. The rookie center fiielder took off during catcher Eric Fryers return throw to pitcher Antonio Bastardo and scored standing up when Fryer could not handle Bastardos low throw to the plate.ddddddddddddIt was the fourth time the Padres had a straight steal of home this season, and the second by Jankowski. We know they like to run but we talked more just about the running game with guys on first and second, we never worked for a play at the plate, Bastardo said. That caught me by surprise.Jankowski was 2 for 4 with a double and the only player on either side with multiple hits.Ryan Buchter and Brandon Maurer completed the two-hitter with one perfect inning each. The Padres capitalized on a throwing error by Vogelsong and a fielding error by third baseman Jung Ho Kang to score twice in the second inning.Ryan Schimpf doubled and scored on Alexei Ramirezs single in the seventh to make it 3-0.The Pirates remained 2 1/2 games behind the Miami Marlins for the second NL wild card.TRAINERS ROOMPirates: C Francisco Cervelli left the game in the fifth inning with left wrist discomfort. ... 1B John Jaso sat after sustaining a bruised left eye in a home plate collision Tuesday night, though he passed MLBs concussion protocol. ...
